Achieving Goals
Why is it so hard to achieve our goals in fitness?
The answer may seem crazy for some or simple in the eyes of others, and the reality comes to each individual. We all have different lives and challenges! Poor Organization, lack of Commitment, and deficiency in a Realistic Approach tend to be the leaders or main common factors associated with non-achieved goals. There is a strategy well known as START goals that can also be used to manage a better approach toward achieving the goals we seek.
Identifying our goals is the first step toward achieving everything we want.
The goals must be specific, which means you should use concrete action verbs: "I want to lose 10 pounds, and increase my strength within three months, so I can move better and have more energy".
Then, your goals must be measurable: "I want to lose 10 pounds", instead of "I want to be skinnier".
Also, your goals must be attainable: Losing 10 pounds in two months vs. 50 pounds in one month is not the same. We must add some realistic goals that match the level of commitment, time, and support system we have available at the starting point. This translates to the question... can you commit to the necessary challenges associated with nutrition, workout routine, sleep, reduction of stress, and family or friends' support in your journey? As it may be publicly known to many, some people do not succeed in their goals because their family/ friends are a constant way or path toward "a cheat meal" "discouragement comments", etcetera.
Next, the goals must be realistic: If you want to exercise 40 minutes/ 4 times a week, you need to be sincere with yourself. Can you commit to it? if not, then start small. 20 minutes twice a week and build up. there is no shame in starting to exercise or move around for only 10-15 minutes only because that is all your body and mind are allowing you at this moment. So, put the ego and discouragement aside and start building up that time. The goal is 1% better every single day.
Lastly, the goals must be time sensitive; this means that you set up a timeline for your goal (beginning and end date) with the steps to get to it. Do not start a goal with no path to an end, or no plans B, and C. Always plan ahead, think about the options you have. We do not drive a vehicle with no destination, right? Make a list, be realistic, stick to it, and see through the end of the list.
